Modernist Network Cymru (MONC) is a national modernist studies network. Inspired by its sister organisation the Scottish Network of Modernist Studies, the network aims to bring together scholars and professionals working on modernism in Wales to encourage collaboration and communication.
The group includes, but is not limited to, the study of Welsh modernism. In order to be as inclusive as possible, we define modernism broadly as literary, artistic, musical and cultural responses to modernity, predominately (but not exclusively) in the first half of the twentieth century. We are an interdisciplinary network and welcome both members who work on ‘High Modernism’ as it is traditionally defined and those who work on modern popular culture, the middlebrow, or conceptions of modernity more generally.
We have a mailing list which we use to share details of upcoming events and announcements. Our first biannual conference, A Century On, took place at Swansea University in September 2015; our second biannual conference, Word and Image, took place at the National Library of Wales/Aberystwyth School of Art in September 2017.
